Where is Mauritius?
Mauritius is located just off the south-east coast of Africa amongst the Indian Ocean, it is about 550 miles from the mainland being east of Madagascar. The republic of Mauritius also includes other Islands as well as the Island of Mauritius, namely Rodrigues,Cargados Carajos and the Agalega Islands. The capital city of the Island of Mauritius is Port Louis.
Mauritius Climate
Mauritius is a tropical island with good weather all year round. Summer highs are at about 33 degrees and winter lows at 22 degrees Celsius.Cyclone season is during the first two months of the year so you may want to avoid holidaying during this time.
Mauritian Language
Mauritius is made up of a mix of cultures with about five languages spoken. These languages include Creole, French, Bhojpuri and English. English and French are the official languages of the country. Creole is the most widely used language and is spoken by over 80% of the population.
The Origins Of The Mauritius people
Mauritius has no indigenous people. All groups of people currently living there are all immigrants with the largest group being people of Indian origin. The Indians first arrived in Mauritius as indentured slaves for the British and the French.
Religion in Mauritius
The main religion is Hinduism with about a 50% following. Catholics make up about a quarter of the population with the rest being Muslims and other religions. Mauritians are a bit conservative so it is best to dress conservatively.
The Standard of living in Mauritius
Mauritius is Africa’s most densely populated country. It however is one of the richest and most developed in the continent.
Mauritius Currency
The currency is the Mauritius Rupee (MUR) which is not in circulation outside of Mauritius. Currency can be exchanged at the airport on arrival or in any one of the forex bureaus in the country.
The Mauritius Dodo
The expression ‘dead as a dodo’ makes reference to the dodo bird which was native to Mauritius. It is now extinct.
